Philosophy

Sumo is more than a sport. It is a reflection of discipline, respect, and ritual that have developed during the last 1,500 years in Japan.

One American sumo wrestler summed up the philosphy this way: “Never give up, always move forward, and keep your mind empty of negative thoughts."

The nearly religious aspects of the sport are the bedrock of tradition that has made sumo such an enduring part of Japanese culture.

Just as some kids dream of becoming professional baseball, football, or basketball players, others fantasize about life as a "Rikishi" (professional Sumo Wrestler). Few, however, get the chance to go head-to-head (or would this be head-to-navel?) with one of their heros!
