Goodwill

Major sumo tournaments take place in Japan only during the odd-numbered months. During the even-numbered months, professional tours bring the sport to other countries around the world.

The sumo wrestlers act as goodwill ambassadors for Japan, as they bring an important part of the history and culture of their home to foreign lands.

Sumo tours have been held in places as far-flung as Israel or as close-to-home as South Korea. The Grand Sumo Tour in Los Angeles in June 2008 marked the return of the sport to that city after a 27-year absence. In August 2008, sumo wrestling will have its first-ever training tour to Mongolia.
